Riva St Kilda Restaurant, Melbourne
“Last week, one of the 12m PILA fibreglass flagpoles installed at the front of our restaurant was driven into, most likely by a 4WD with a bull bar. This was a big impact, causing the structure to move and the steel base on the pole to suffer damage. The fibreglass flagpole itself, by comparison, stood up to the impact extremely well and does not need to be repaired or replaced. We are very happy to have purchased your fibreglass flagpoles as it has saved us from an expensive repair bill.” Riva St Kilda

The most common flag pole size purchased in Australia is 6m. Use the following as a guideline to choosing the appropriate height flag pole for your application:6m – 1 – 2 storey commercial building or standard residential home9m – 3 storey commercial building or large residential estate12m – 4 + storey commercial building.

What type of flag pole should I buy – fibreglass or aluminium?

There are 2 main material choices for flagpoles in Australia – Fibreglass and Aluminium. There is a big difference between fibreglass and aluminium in terms of performance and strength with fibreglass being the superior product choice for a variety of reasons. PILA always recommend fibreglass flag poles as they sustainable and more environmentally friendly than aluminium, they are cost effective, more hard wearing and easier to maintain. PILA’s fibreglass flag poles are fantastic value as all PILA fibreglass flag poles come complete with a vandal proof (internal) rope halyard, an OH&S compliant hinge base and they have a 5 year warranty for peace of mind and value for money.

What type of flag will be flown – landscape or portrait?

If you are flying a landscape flag a rope and cleat flagpole is required. This is a standard flagpole. If you are flying a portrait flag a banner arm is required. See our Banner Pole page for more information.

How can I protect my flag poles from a security perspective?

The rope and flag can be protected by choosing a vandal proof (internal) halyard system complete with a lockable access door on the flag pole which can only be accessed with a key. When a flagpole is installed in a public area, vandalism can be minimised by securing the rope inside the pole, preventing it from being cut and the flag from being stolen. All PILA fibreglass flag poles come complete with a vandal proof rope halyard included in the standard purchase price.

Who can install my flag pole?

PILA can offer a complete service from next day ‘rush’ supply of flag poles to full installations. All of our on-site team are fully trained to work at heights and have OH&S qualifications. In locations where PILA can not install, we can often recommend local installers who can complete the job to a professional standard but all PILA flag poles are designed for easy DIY installation by and capable handyman, landscaper or builder, saving our clients time and money.

Do I need planning permission for my flag pole?

Generally a 6m flag pole can be installed at a residential address without planning permission from your local council. In some areas a larger flag pole may be installed without council approval but it is always wise to contact your council to confirm planning permission is not required prior to ordering your flag pole. For commercial locations, it is recommended you always contact your local council to gain approval in writing prior to installing your flag poles. Any national flag may be flown on any sized single vertical flagpole as long as it does not have anything added to the design of the flag or any advertising material added to the flagstaff. If you want to fly any other flag or more than 1 flag per flag pole it is recommended you contact your local council for advice, guidance and approval if necessary.
