The Risks of Using Home Made Goal Posts

Over the last few years home made goal posts have been almost phased out and for good reason. Goal posts are nearly always used in a public arena where unsuspecting citizens and children exercise and play.

“If the public are at risk of injury or death from dangerous home made goal posts, councils, clubs and schools are at serious risk of breaching their insurance liability policy’s and being sued,” said PILA Managing Director Reece Wooldridge.

“We often have clients tell us they can’t afford to upgrade their goal posts and will just make their own. While we understand the initial outlay may be more than clients want to pay we always remind them of the massive risk they are taking with regard to potential litigation if the inevitable happens.

We don’t like to scare people but unfortunately if goal posts are not engineered, manufactured and tested to Australian standards then the risk of failure is huge. While goal posts seem like easy products to make, they are used for sports and players are rough. If goal posts fail structurally, I wouldn’t want my children or myself anywhere near them,” say’s PILA Sales Manager Michael Reid.

“If welding is not up to standards, materials are not up to industry specifications, designs have not been tested and calculated correctly then home made goal posts can compromise the safety of those using them and even those who assemble and store them at the beginning and end of season,” says Reece Wooldridge.

Goal posts need to be made to safety standards to ensure safe use by the general public. All PILA goal posts are manufactured in accordance with Australian Standards and European Standards and come with warranties against faulty workmanship or parts, to ensure the safest products available.
