Sydney Swans Unveil PILA AFL Goal Posts
Sydney Swans AFL players Lewis Roberts-Thompson, Josh Kennedy and Matthew Dick have visited Con O’Keefe Oval at Albion Park to help launch the ground’s PILA goal posts as part of their AFL South Coast development tour. The Albion Park Junior Crows AFL club purchased PILA AFL goal posts with the assistance of AFL NSW/ACT, for whom PILA are the exclusive preferred supplier of goal posts. The goal posts were part of a five year project to establish a summer training base and year-round schools venue for AFL in Albion Park. This is the fourth ground in the Shellharbour district that will provide facilities specifically for the sport.
“This is a wonderful outcome for the young people of Albion Park and the development of sport in our city,” Shellharbour mayor Marianne Saliba said. “It is important that our community has access to a range of sports facilities to encourage participation in physical activities and the healthy development of our residents,” Cr Saliba said. “It is through the ongoing partnership between council and sports organisations that we can continue to provide resources for our sports community,” she added.
The Crows club, now in their sixth season, is confident of increasing last year’s teams from three to five in 2013, allowing them to field all grades between the ages of Auskick (five to eights) to under-12s. “While the Crows home ground will remain at Croome Road Sporting Complex, Con O’Keefe Oval was looked at as a training venue due to its proximity to the town centre and schools,” former club president Craig Pusser said. “All schools now conduct AFL programs and having a set of goal posts up all year round provides these schools with access to hold their AFL school programs and our club can now stage gala days and out-of-season training sessions. The utilisation of Con O’Keefe Oval as an AFL field now gives our junior club the Albion Park Crows the opportunity to begin training at this time of the year.”
The Albion Park Crows thanked AFL NSW/ACT, AFL South Coast, Shellharbour City Council, Albion Park Cricket Club, sponsors and volunteers for their support.
